Our ability to communicate connects us to each other. It is through this capacity
that we are able to express our most profound human feelings, obtain and provide
reassurance and encouragement, and give and receive information. Communication is
the essential building block for enjoying family life and friendships, working,
learning and developing lifelong relationships. Yet most of us
take our communication skills for granted.
More than 44 million Americans have a communication disorder. Despite advances in communication
disorders research and technology, many of these persons remain isolated, unable
to attain their full life potential.
Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center (CHSC) has a long and remarkable history of
helping individuals with communication challenges become independent members of
the Greater Cleveland Community. Founded in 1921, we began with the simple mission
of "providing lipreading classes for adults who are deaf or hard of hearing."
We are the nation's oldest freestanding hearing, speech and deafness center,
and Northeast Ohio's only nonprofit organization dedicated solely to serving those
with special communication needs. CHSC consistently serves over 10,000 children
and adults each year in the departments of Audiology, Community Services for the
Deaf & Hard of Hearing and Speech-Language Pathology.
A staff of more than 50 professionals — audiologists, sign language interpreters,
speech-language pathologists, outreach specialists and administrative staff — are
employed at the Center's headquarters in University Circle and three branch offices
in South Euclid, Broadview Heights and Lorain.
Our guiding principle, "to serve as many persons as possible regardless of their
demonstrated inability to pay," sets us apart from for-profit businesses offering
